To showcase the personalities of the people behind the media and marketing sector, The Drum speaks to individuals who are bringing something a little different to the industry and talks to them about what insights and life experience they can offer the rest of us. This week’s 10 Questions are put to Stan Pavlovsky, newly appointed chief executive officer of Shutterstock.Â
What was your first-ever job?Â
My first job was at a 7-Eleven in Westwood, LA as a store clerk. I was 15 years old and that job taught me many things at a young age including the importance of hard work, how to work with a diverse set of customers and the ins and outs of a retail environment.
Which industry buzzword annoys you most?
One buzzword that I hear a lot is “big-data, and the reason it always bothers me is that everyone has data, but not everyone has insights.
Who do you find most interesting to follow on social media?
Twitter is one of my favorite forms of social media. I quickly and easily get a lot of my news from Twitter by following sources like the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The New York Times and Forbes.
However, I like to follow some funny personalities in the entertainment world as well. From the jokes of Ricky Gervais to Ellen Degeneres hiding and scaring guests on her show, I like to mix it up.
Highlight of your career (so far?)
Stepping into the role of CEO at Shutterstock is by far, the highlight of my career.
What piece of tech can you not live without?
My iPhone. I always have it on me and I can do anything from work emails on Gmail to word games and Snapchat filters with my daughters.
Who or what did you have posters of on your bedroom wall as a teenager?
I was, and still am, a huge rock fan. As a teenager, I had Def Leppard posters all over my room.
In advertising, what needs to change soon?
There are a few companies that have too much power within advertising and technology. These companies have all the data and it’s time that other organizations get into the data and performance space.
Also, there needs to be a standardized attribution solution that allows marketers to be more effective with cross channel marketing. New players will bring fresh perspectives, and push the incumbents to innovate further.
What is (in your opinion) the greatest film/album/book of your life?
These are the mediums I use to unwind, so my favorites are all classics. Favorite movie: The Usual Suspects; favorite album: Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance; favorite book: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Which industry event can you not afford to miss each year and why?
The five-day international festival of creativity, Cannes Lions, is a great way for our team to connect face to face with our creative and advertising clients.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
I’m a worrier by nature, so the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given was from my daughter who constantly reminds me to “stay in the moment.
