BBC Creative turns to fan nostalgia to fill 2020 Glastonbury gap

June 26, 2020 by Imogen Watson

On what was supposed to be Glastonbury Festival’s 50th birthday, this weekend BBC Sounds is bringing the festival to homes – virtually. To point people towards the ‘Glastonbury Experience’ hub, BBC Creative has produced a film that nostalgically flicks through footage filmed by festival-goers over the years.

With a heavy heart the festival announced in March that this year’s 50th anniversary event would not take place due to safety concerns concerning the coronavirus outbreak, causing dismay for those who had bagged a coveted ticket.

The organisers felt the show must go on – for those with or without tickets to the 2020 edition. And so the ‘Glastonbury Experience’ is taking place over the five days when the event was due to go ahead, with archived footage filling the slots where real acts would have played, across BBC Player, BBC Sounds and on BBC TV channels.

To mark the occasion, BBC’s in-house creative team pulled together a montage using exclusively fan footage to time-hop between years from the perspective of those who attended. It is narrated by Radio 1 DJ Amfo.

“For festival and music fans alike, the news of this year’s Glastonbury cancellation was not an easy one to take,” said Lambros Charalambous, creative head, BBC Sounds.

“But with this, we thought what better way to celebrate the festival this time around than by using it as a chance to reflect and reminisce about the incredible moments we’ve all shared together on the BBC.

“The campaign was built solely using fan photography from in and around the Pyramid stage over the past decades, turning 2020 into a Glastonbury to remember.”

To point people towards the ‘Glastonbury Experience’ hub, BBC Creative has produced a film that nostalgically brings together the best moments over the years from the world’s most iconic festival.
With a heavy heart, on 18 March, Glastonbury Festival put out a statement to say this year’s 50th anniversary would not take place this year – due to safety concerns concerning the coronavirus outbreak. Planned attendees erupted in sadness from the news, while some who failed to get their hands on the coveted (famously hard to get) tickets were delighted.
Despite this, the organisers felt the show must go on – for those with or without tickets to the 2020 edition.
